‘Accident in Iranian nuclear reactor’, day after start-up of new centrifuges | Abroad

“The incident has not claimed any casualties or caused pollution,” stressed a spokesman for the Iranian nuclear agency, who said there were electricity problems in the underground plant.

A fire broke out in the plant last year. According to the Iranian government, it was the result of an Israeli sabotage attempt. The Natanz nuclear reactor is at the center of the Iranian regime’s uranium enrichment plans, which critics say wants to use the uranium to make nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is therefore keeping an eye on developments in Natanz.

Obama-deal

Tehran and Washington have been trying to revive the 2015 nuclear weapons treaty since Joe Biden’s presidency after former President Donald Trump withdrew from it three years ago. Trump then decided to reintroduce sanctions against the Iranian regime. That in turn decided to expand the nuclear program, against the rules of the treaty.

Iran and the US put their demands on the table this week in indirect talks in Vienna. Although both countries do not want to give in to the other, there was talk of constructive consultation on both sides.
