A traffic accident that occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 27 in the province of Guantánamo left at least four people injured on the La Farola Viaduct highway, where a bus was hit by a cargo truck.
According to state journalist Miguel Reyes Mendoza, the bus was covering the Baracoa-Santiago de Cuba route, and was hit by a truck near Alto de Cotilla.
After the crash, four people were injured. The passengers of the bus had to be taken out through the windows of the vehicle and were taken to the municipality of Imías.
Likewise, it was reported that the Emergency Medical Service and the Red Cross did not report cases of serious injuries or deaths.
The four injured were loaded into an ambulance that was already near that road, so they could be taken to Baracoa to receive first aid.
In the comments, Internet users were relieved to not have to mourn human losses, with some of them emphasizing how dangerous it is to drive in some parts of that region.
“Thank goodness there were no deaths, on those hills you have to be very careful”; “What sad news, speedy recovery for the injured” and “La Farola is a road with many curves and very steep. Drivers have to drive with great caution, but they don’t,” were some of the opinions shared.
While what happened this Wednesday in Guantánamo did not have such serious consequences, traffic accidents have become one of the main causes of death in the country in recent years.
Figures shared by the National Road Safety Commission (CNSV) revealed that by the end of 2023, accidents were reduced by 13% and injuries by 7%, that period saw the death of 22 more people than in 2022.
During one of the CNSV meetings, the authorities of the Government and the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) regretted this increase in the number of deaths, something that was attributed to the “irresponsibility of pedestrians and drivers of motorcycles and mopeds.”
The state press indicated that, in an attempt to reduce these numbers, authorities focused on stopping drivers who were driving with expired licenses. In that sense, the licenses of 13,005 people were withdrawn, a much larger number than the previous year.
