Accident at the Grande Roue de Montréal: a 22-year-old employee in “critical” condition

MONTREAL – A 22-year-old Grande Roue de Montréal employee is between life and death following a workplace accident on Christmas Day.

Urgences-santé reported that its paramedics intervened around 12:35 p.m. at the Old Port of Montreal facility.

The injured worker was taken to hospital in “critical” condition, said Jérémie Lachance, an operations advisor for the paramedical company.

Mr. Lachance said he was unable to specify the nature of the accident or the exact place where it occurred.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) indicated that since it was a work accident, the investigation was transferred to the Commission des normes, de l’énergie, de la santé et de occupational safety (CNESST).

Investigators would have been requested on the scene to shed light on the circumstances of the accident, said Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson for the SPVM.

Facility officials refuse to disclose what happened while “awaiting the results of the investigation,” said a public relations firm they hired.

This is a decision of the Grande Roue de Montréal and not a directive from the CNESST or the police, confirmed spokesperson Mathieu Filion, to The Canadian Press.

La Grande Roue de Montréal said in a statement that it “fully cooperates” with the police and that its thoughts “are with our employee as well as those close to him” and that the wheel is closed for the moment.

The CNESST had not responded to a request for information at the time of publication.
