St. Gilgen (Austria) – What a terrible drama! A fatal swimming accident occurred on Thursday at Lake Wolfgang.
A total of four children were out on stand-up paddles on the lake near the town of Abersee and were then blown away by stronger winds.
Because of an approaching thunderstorm, a father (41) swam out onto the lake with a friend to rescue the children and bring them to shore.
“When the children were safely on the shore, there was no trace of the 41-year-old Czech,” said a police spokesman in Salzburg about the accident.
The emergency services launched a search operation. Only after several hours of intensive searching were the man’s lifeless body found by divers from the fire service and water rescue team at a depth of around eight metres and around 15 metres from the shore.
