The busy ICE route between Frankfurt and Cologne was closed early on Friday evening. The reasons given by the railway were an emergency medical intervention near Idstein (Rheingau-Taunus) and catenary damage in the Limburg area.
The train driver reported the accident near Idstein at 5:18 p.m., a spokeswoman told hr. The emergency services were on site. Even late in the evening it was still unclear what happened in the accident. The responsible federal police did not yet have any further information.
Damage to the overhead line near Limburg occurred almost at the same time. It was probably caused by an ICE, as the federal police spokesman said.

The route was closed in both directions. Numerous trains had to be rerouted and were delayed by around 90 minutes, like the train on their website informed. The route is not expected to be reopened until Saturday.
Three trains stranded on the open track
Three trains were directly affected by the incidents and were on the open track for several hours. The ICE train involved in the accident near Idstein was only able to continue its journey shortly before 9 p.m., a railway spokesman said.
A train that stopped around 500 meters from Limburg-Süd train station due to damage to the overhead line was evacuated with the help of the fire department at around 8:10 p.m. The third ICE was north of Limburg and arrived at the station there shortly after 8 p.m., as the railway spokesman reported. Shortly afterwards, a bus service started for the stranded passengers.
