Political map of Spain: Materials for the accessibility of blind people
From the ONCE Social Group We are actively working to make life easier for blind people with maps like the ones you can find here. This political map of Spain is designed so that everything can be touched and heard, and so that all people can understand and understand the particularities of the Spanish territory in full.
He ONCE Bibliographic Service (SBO) is responsible for building these maps with very specific procedures. First, the map matrix is designed and, with it, all the physical and braille elements necessary so that, from that moment on, all the copies that are required can be made. Subsequently, the maps are printed on a large format printer on a sheet of plastic material and, with heat and suction, the map is glued perfectly to the relief of the plastic. This manufacturing method is similar to that used for tourist relief maps of countries or of specific mountainous areas.
This process is applied to the creation of the map of Spain and the rest of the maps produced by Grupo Social ONCE.
Besides, the ONCE Bibliographic Service and the
have recently prepared and published a new edition of the physical map of Spain which includes an explanatory guide. It is a didactic material aimed at students and the general public. It is mainly intended for exploration through touch, but combining the shapes of the relief with a visual representation in well-contrasted colors. In this way, in addition to providing an additional means of perception to people with different visual disabilities, the aim is also to encourage the participation of those who do not have any visual disability, in order to promote mutual inclusion between groups and publicize our materials. educational beyond its usual circle of users.
However, the priority is the purely tactile experience, so prior adaptation work is necessary so that the exploration of the map allows a good spatial understanding of each element separately and of all of them, something that also happens with the political map and all its lines and borders.
This map and the rest of the collection are the result of joint work over the years between the Spanish Braille Commission and the ONCE Bibliographic Service. Following the initial pedagogical criteria established by the ONCE Education Department, a team of professionals has been in charge of preparing the guidelines for manufacturing these materials. Their accumulated experience and the information provided by users on the understanding and usefulness of the maps have been very useful for reviewing and updating the elaboration criteria that will allow the final product to be improved.
