Academy against rats how to eliminate them | Univision 41 New York WXTV

Although rats have existed in New York since the 1700s, when they arrived on ships from Europe, in recent years they have become more than a problem: a threat to the health of New Yorkers, due to their rapid spread.

To stop this spread, the city has created “Academies for rats” which are actually “Academies against rats”, since the classes are not directed at them, but against them.

These three-hour classes are available to everyone, but can be especially helpful to: construction superintendents and crews, property managers and owners, neighborhood associations, community gardeners, and local businesses.

Curious facts that occur in the academy against rats

As part of the training, participants are shown biology lessons and the behavior of rats, accompanied by curious facts about them. For example: Did you know that rats can gnaw through anything softer than steel, including concrete? Or that they can climb up toilet systems? Those are some of the curiosities that are learned in the academies against rats.

New York is home to two million rats, and since they breed quickly, you have to learn how to fight them. One of the measures is: not providing them with the environment they like: garbage, disorder, bushes near the floor…

Tips from the rat academy to stop their spread

Some of the advice given in these academies against rats are:

  • Keep your house and surroundings clean, including sidewalks, so they know they are not welcome.

  • Trim plants and keep bushes off the ground. If you discover an inactive burrow, close it with soil.

  • Garbage feeds rats, so always store it in a hard-top bin.

  • Never have piles of newspapers, paper bags, cardboard and bottles around your house.

  • Seal all holes and cracks in walls, floors, under doors and around windows.
