Academic year: 1st cycle with classes all day, autonomy to decide schedules in the 2nd and 3rd cycle. And solutions for risk groups are lacking

It is to maintain the school regime full time in the 1st cycle, even during the pandemic: schools should only allocate classes to students only in the morning or only in the afternoon “in very exceptional cases, duly justified and as long as there is an agreement between all parties ”, which includes parents. Guidance is given by the Ministry of Education and quoted by “Público” this Friday. In other words, classes for students from the 1st to the 4th year must remain at the usual time, between 9 am and 4 pm, with curriculum enrichment activities after 5:30 pm, with an optional presence.

As for the 2nd and 3rd cycles (5th to 9th grade), the tutelage gave schools autonomy to organize schedules in the best way they consider to avoid contagion – and this means concentrating the functioning of the classes only in a single shift, morning or afternoon. This already happens for most of the students of the 3rd cycle and secondary, but the ministry reminds that, in order to fulfill the curricular load, the schedules will have to be extended: either starting classes at 8 am, or finishing them at 7:10 pm.

At the same time, schools still have little guidance on how to plan distance classes for students, teachers and even employees in risk groups, writes “Jornal de Notícias”. The newspaper confirmed that the question has been raised by the ministry, which has only said that students who are unable to attend classes will have to justify absences, and teachers and staff in the same situation will have to leave. A resolution of the Council of Ministers is still in force which makes teleworking mandatory, when required by the worker, “whenever the functions in question allow it”. Fenprof estimates that about 10% of teachers – 12 thousand professionals – are in risk groups.
