Despite being the country with the best results in Latin America, Chile experienced a clear setback in the PISA 2022 test. These show a significant gap between men and women in academic performance. The most affected were women, who experienced a drop of 11 points in both mathematics and reading compared to the 2018 test.
According to the results of the PISA 2022 test, one of the most important in the world, carried out by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), it shows that Chile experienced a significant decline in mathematics and reading compared to the 2018 results. Javier Arroyo, expert in online learning and co-founder of Smartick, comments that, “although these are worrying data, it is important to highlight that there are alternative, innovative and complementary solutions to improve education in Chile. “Taking advantage of educational platform technology can enable students to considerably raise their performance in mathematics and reading in an effective and fun way.”
Despite being the country with the best results in Latin America, Chile obtained an average score of 412 points in mathematics and 448 points in reading, which represents a decrease of 5 and 4 points, respectively, compared to the results four years ago. , this marks a setback and demonstrates, according to the OECD, that more than 55% of Chilean students fail to achieve the essential skills necessary to fully participate in a modern society. “The pandemic had a significant impact on education around the world. The transition to online pedagogy and the interruption of face-to-face classes have affected schoolchildren and teachers. In addition, it affected the mental health of both young people and educators, which could also have harmed their ability to concentrate and learn,” explains Arroyo.
Regarding other relevant data from the international report, according to the OECD, the average mathematics score of member countries decreased by 15 points between the results of 2018 and 2022, which represents a historical record. The average reading score dropped 10 points, double the previous record, while science performance did not change significantly.
The results showed an alarming gap between men and women in Chile. An example of this is in mathematics, while the country experienced an overall decrease of 5 points compared to the conclusion of the 2018 report, women were the most affected, experiencing a significant drop of 11 points. In reading, where the general decrease was 4 points since 2018, they again suffered a more pronounced drop, this time of 11 points compared to the previous measurement.
“The results of the PISA 2022 test are worrying and reflect the need for a more personalized education adapted to the needs of each child. At Smartick, we believe that technology can be a powerful tool to improve the academic performance of schoolchildren. Our personalized mathematics and reading comprehension learning program for children ages 4 to 14 can help close the educational gap and improve students’ academic performance,” concludes the expert.
