After racist insults against French soccer goalkeeper Mike Maignan (28) from AC Milan by fans of Udinese Calcio, a first suspect has been tracked down.
The Italian Serie A club from Udine announced that the man had received a lifelong stadium ban with immediate effect. He is primarily responsible for the racist chants last Saturday. The man was identified from video footage from the stadium.
There was a racism scandal in the game between Udinese and third-placed Milan on Saturday evening. Several Udinese fans shouted racist insults at Maignan and booed him. The game had to be temporarily interrupted. Milan’s keeper first spoke to referee Fabio Maresca and was then hugged and kissed by teammates. Maignan then went from the pitch to the dressing room and returned a short time later. The game could then be continued again.
As the Italian news agency Ansa reported, the man is said to have shouted the worst racist insults towards Maignan during the game and repeated them several times. This was proven by recordings that Udinese made available to the authorities after the incident. Accordingly, investigations are still underway against other fans who are said to have taken part in the shouts and chants.
The latest racism incident in Serie A caused outrage in the football world. Numerous fellow players and sports officials expressed their solidarity with Maignan. The black professional footballer then harshly criticized Udinese. “The Udinese club, which only spoke of an interruption in the game as if nothing had happened: you are complicit,” wrote the Frenchman on social media. Udinese announced that they would investigate the incident.
