For the first time in more than six months, fewer people died last week than is normal for the time of year. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) points to the lockdown, the booster campaign and the emergence of the presumably less deadly omikron variant as possible causes. But the researchers do not yet have the data with which to demonstrate this.
At the end of 2021, there was no longer any excess mortality for the first time in months. That’s what it’s called when more people die than can be explained by usual fluctuations in death rates. This development continued, resulting in a remarkably low death rate last week.
An estimated 3250 people died, more than 100 fewer than expected.
05.50 – Nearly 55 percent of all adults have received a booster shot, pace further down
Fewer and fewer people are getting a booster shot against the coronavirus. Nearly 766,000 boosts have been given in the past seven days. That is the lowest pace since early December, according to new figures released by the government.
Nearly 7.9 million people have received a booster shot through Wednesday. Up to and including last Sunday, the counter stood at 7.6 million booster shots, which was 1.1 million more than the week before. The pace may drop even further.
Nearly 55 percent of all adults have now had a booster shot. The RIVM estimates that about 1.1 million people are not yet able to get a boost. Because they recently had corona, or their previous shot was less than three months ago.
