Abrysvo is a vaccine designed to protect babies against a respiratory virus in the first 6 months of life. The vaccine includes a single dose and is produced by Pfizer, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.
According to the company, the vaccine stimulates the creation of antibodies that are transferred from mother to child through the placenta, it writes NBC News.
It is the first vaccine that can protect babies against this disease.
The US has approved a new vaccine for pregnant women
Health regulators in the United States have approved a vaccine for pregnant women for the first time. It aims to protect babies against bronchiolitis. It is a potentially dangerous respiratory infection, especially for newborns, writes AFP AGERPRES.
The vaccine developed by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is marketed under the name Abrysvo. It targets the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which in its most severe forms can cause pneumonia and bronchiolitis.
The new vaccine is created for pregnant women, whose pregnancies are between 32 and 36 weeks. The serum is administered in a single dose by intramuscular injection.
Babies will be protected in this way during their first six months of life, the FDA said, thanks to the antibodies transmitted by the babies’ mothers.
The same vaccine was already authorized in May 2023 in the United States for people over 60 years old.
The serum was also approved in July by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) – both for babies and for the elderly. But the European Commission must take a decision regarding its commercialization on the European Union market.
This virus “is a common cause of illness in children. And babies are among those most at risk of developing a serious illness. Which can lead to hospitalizations,” said Peter Marks, an FDA official. Marks praised this vaccine for pregnant women against a “potentially fatal” disease.
RSV epidemics are seasonal
Outbreaks of RSV, a highly contagious virus, are seasonal. Last winter, hospitals were overcrowded on both sides of the Atlantic because of an epidemic of impressive magnitude.
Recently, more than 5,000 hidden viruses have been discovered in the ocean.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the main public health agency in the United States. It is expected to recommend approval of the new vaccine before immunizations can begin. A vaccine against this virus, for pregnant women, is a success in these situations.
The United States records between 58,000 and 80,000 hospitalizations associated with this virus in children under the age of five each year. As well as between 100 and 300 deaths, according to the CDC. Respiratory syncytial virus is the number one cause of hospitalization for infants in the United States.
The British pharmaceutical giant GSK obtained at the beginning of May the first approval in the world issued for a vaccine against bronchiolitis. FDA approval for adults over 60 years of age. The Pfizer Group obtained a similar authorization shortly thereafter. The Moderna company is also registered in this race.
