Former Sporting manager and former presidential candidate was 68 years old
Sérgio Abrantes Mendes, former director of Sporting and twice candidate for the presidency of the emblem of Alvalade, died last night in Lisbon, aged 68, victim of a prolonged illness. Always linked to the Leonean cause through the direct influence of his father António, a former player, coach and manager of Lisbon, Sérgio Abrantes Mendes was also a football player, although an amateur, and followed in his father’s footsteps in the academic path, graduating in Law at the year 1976.
He then spent a large part of his professional career as a judge at the Court of Appeal in Évora.
Deeply linked to Sporting’s active life, Abrantes Mendes began to stand out as chairman of the General Meeting Board during the presidency of Jorge Gonçalves, at the end of the 1980s, and remained an audible and respected voice in the leonine universe. until the end of life.
