Chelsea’s sale process has taken a new turn. Its still owner, the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, has raised the price of the club and has increased it by 600 million eurosaccording to the British press.
Abramovich was one of the oligarchs affected by the sanctions imposed by the British government as a result of the invasion of Ukraine ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, he is authorized to sell Chelsea as long as he does not benefit financially from the sale. When the sale process seems to have entered its final stretch, Abramovich would have decided to increase the price of the club by 600 million euros. This would make Chelsea’s price stand at 3,000 million euros.
The British media insist that the Russian is ready to donate the money to those affected by the invasion of Ukraine. Sky News assures that the three business consortiums bidding for Chelsea would have already been informed of Abramovich’s latest decision. The Raine Group, the bank overseeing the sale process, could announce the club’s new owner as early as next week.
One of the groups that has reached this final stretch to acquire Chelsea is led by Sir Martin Broughton, former president of Liverpool, and includes Lewis Hamilton, Serena Williams and has the support of Sebastian Coe. Another group is headed by Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, of the NBA, and the Dodgers, of the MLB. The third group is headed Steve Pagliucaco-owner of the Boston Celtics of the NBA, and in which the businessman participates Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman and co-owner of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd, the company that owns the Toronto Raptors (NBA), Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), and Toronto FC (MLS). He also owns the Scotiabank Arena, formerly known as the Air Canada Center, the arena in which the Raptors and Maple Leafs play.
