On the passage to Italy
As a young English boy I wanted to stay in England. Roma, Atalanta and many other teams arrived, I was convincing myself that I wanted to stay in the Premier League and that I had something to prove. But my father, my parents and the agent sat me down and said “you scored goals at Chelsea, Swansea and Bristol City, go live life abroad”. I realized that few players can say they have been successful in Italy, in Serie A and in a team like Roma. I have never backed down, so when this challenge came I thought that since I am still young, now is the best time to face it.
Your Mourinho
Mourinho is a character we all know. There is a reason why I call him the best manager in the world. He knows how to lead you, he knows how to get inside your skin and he knows how to make you feel like a very special player. He keeps pushing me to do my best. When I feel I’ve done enough, he tells me I need to do more. I lived it when I was at Chelsea as a child, I went to train with the first team and he was always hard on me, he always pushed me to improve, I felt like when I did something right I had to do it better. This is exactly what I needed, especially after the difficult season I had at Chelsea where I wasn’t playing. Coming here and having a manager like Mourinho who trains you and believes in you just gives you more confidence.

When you score or don’t score, you always check if another attacker scores. I also do it in Serie A. If I don’t score a match, I check to see who is the top scorer. I like to see other players, especially the English forwards doing well. Harry Kane has taken some form and is scoring a lot of goals, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back to playing on his level, Ollie Watkins is doing well. It’s inspiring to see other players do well because it pushes you to do even better. This is the mentality I have. My competition is myself. If I don’t score a match and I don’t play well, I can’t sleep at night, and if I waste a scoring opportunity but still score, I’m angry because I want to score more.
On the future and market rumors
When I see them approaching me at other clubs it makes me feel good, it makes you feel like I’m doing something right. It feels good to see your name in all the papers. But I have to focus on Rome, then who knows what the future holds. Of course I grew up in England, I’m a London boy, so maybe one day I’ll go back to the Premier League. But at the moment I’m focused only on Roma, I want to do my best and I hope to win with these guys a trophy that has been missing for many years.
