LONDON / OSLO (Dagbladet): It has been a few days since Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son, Charles, became King of Great Britain.
The new monarch has already served several missions in public.
UK expert and senior lecturer at Agder University Erik Mustad thinks the new king has so far appeared humble, overwhelmed and approachable.
– He simply learned something from 1997 and Diana’s death. The speech he gave to the nation, combined with the presence of the crowd outside Buckingham Palace, was very beautiful, Mustad says.
– Above all expectations
On Friday evening, King Charles gave his first official speech. A speech around which there was a lot of tension.
However, the reputable expert and lecturer at Kristiania University College, Trond Blindheim, didn’t have high expectations upfront. However, he was pleasantly surprised.
– The way I see it, it delivered beyond all expectations. Both the presentation and the content were good. I’ll give it a six, says Blindheim.
He says that many people have been affected by everything that has happened around Princess Diana and he believes it is something that has remained “sitting like a cold” in many people.
– Now I think he managed to turn the stone. There was good interplay between body language, facial features and words. It appeared highly credible and the speech contained everything a speech should contain.
Mustad also says that King Charles’ early days were five or six on the dice.
– He was restrained, as well as his vocabulary, body language and rhetoric. You could see that he was moved, but at the same time he managed to distance himself a little from overtaking. And that was exactly what the queen stood for, and that’s how he should be too, Mustad points out.
King Charles also took time to greet people outside Buckingham Palace. The videos of the session show the new king, together with Camilla, shaking hands with several people.
Blindheim points out that Charles was smiling too.
– Looks popular and all looks authentic and genuine.
Mustad points out that he continued the mixture of closeness and distance that his mother mastered so well very well.
– He showed sympathy and respect on the other side as well, for those who mourned the death of his mother. It was nice to see, she says.
King Charles was apparently well received by the people of London. Outside Buckingham Palace, he was greeted by applause from those present.
–
– I’m glad Charles is the new king. He has waited 70 years for this, says a reporter from the Dagbladet in London spoke.
– I don’t know him personally, but he seems to me a caring person, who takes his duties seriously, says another.
However, many are in no doubt that he has great shoes to fill.
– He has a lot of work ahead of him, says one.
– There are big shoes to fill. I don’t think we should compare him to his mother, who was a great person, and completely irreplaceable, points out another.
On Friday, King Charles also held an audience with the newly appointed Prime Minister of Great Britain.
Truss himself said that one of the reasons the meeting went well was because the king was so calm.
– He has this glint in his eye, which his mother didn’t have. She was fairness herself in all life situations, while Charles also has humor. He’s down to earth and can talk a little bit, and therefore make people feel calm, and not badly trendy and nervous, Mustad says.
He adds that what the audience saw from the audience, and what we heard afterwards, confirms this impression.
– Things went well here and Charles was accommodating. This shows how in the constitutional monarchy in Britain they help each other.
Mustad points out that Charles has previously expressed some political positions, even if they have been vague in their wording. He thinks we won’t hear about it anymore. He thinks that Charles is now very intent on doing his duty to him, but that he will continue to do it with this glint in his eye.
– This means that people don’t feel as subordinate as they might have felt when they met a real. It will be a bit like meeting Crown Prince Haakon in Norway. He is simple, popular and wants to be a jovial type. Charles has the same qualities and William too, he says.
– There is now national mourning in Great Britain, but everything must also go on, everything must go on. The hereditary monarchy is like this, and in the meeting between Truss and Charles we saw the mixture between mourning and “business as usual”. They show that you can do multiple things at once and that it can be a good signal to send, Mustad adds.

The UK expert points out that it will be important for King Charles to show stability, as his mother has stood there like a rock in the past, carrying the nation’s identity on her shoulders.
– In these changing times, his presence and character can be the most important symbol of unity and stability in the nation.
