Von der Leyen emphasized that the new commission must be able to function better as a team than before and that the different sectors of the commission must work in good cooperation. Von der Leyen also emphasized the importance of equality, her commission has 40 percent women.

According to von der Leyen’s announcement, Virkkus will become one of the six vice-presidents of the Commission. In the new commission, Virkkunen is broadly responsible for technology, security, democracy, strengthening the rule of law and developing digital technology. Von der Leyen said that, for example, in terms of border security, Virkkunen will be responsible for developing border security technology.
In order to become a commissioner, Virkkunen still has to pass the European Parliament’s public consultation. The Parliament will start the hearings of the commissioner candidates in October.
