About Reog Claimed by Malaysia, Khofifah Asks Ponorogo Regent to Collect Documents

SURABAYA, KOMPAS.com – Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa asked the Regent of Ponorogo Sugiri Sancoko to collect scientific documents on art Reog Ponorogo.

This follows news that Malaysia claims and registers Reog Ponorogo art to UNESCO.

“This is a momentum as well as a reminder for the governments of Indonesia and East Java, especially the Regent of Ponorogo to prepare documents that can provide reinforcement to UNESCO, that reog is indeed an intangible cultural heritage from Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia,” said Khofifah in Surabaya, Monday (11/4/2022).

Khofifah specifically invites all parties to pay attention to their own culture.

This can be seen in the government’s efforts, especially Ponorogo Regency to propose Reog Ponorogo as an intangible cultural heritage belonging to Ponorogo Regency and East Java to UNESCO.

However, in the midst of these efforts, there are neighboring countries that are also trying the same thing.

According to Khofifah, historical documentation and tracing is very important to perpetuate the traces of every cultural heritage owned.

To be able to recognize cultural heritage as part of the wealth of an area, administrative matters are needed as authentic evidence.

“This is a very short time to maximize the time to prepare related documents from the validity that Reog Ponorogo was born from Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia, but this is important to prepare,” said Khofifah.

Meanwhile, Head of the East Java Culture and Tourism Office, Sinarto, said the issue of historical and cultural documentation was still a weakness.

“As stated by the Governor, we do have weaknesses regarding history, sometimes we are late in writing rather than cultural trips. Now this is something that must be considered and become more serious,” said Sunarto.
