“About Rap” Series: Exploring the Unique Storyline of African-American Women in the Miami Hip-hop Scene

The author of the script of the series, Aisa Reja (Issa Rae) has been repeatedly nominated for the main awards of the television and film industry, both as an actress, scriptwriter and director. All of her creative work is basically focused on covering African-American life, and the series “About Rap” basically takes place in the Miami rap scene.

“I think it’s a unique time in the hip-hop world, especially when we’re talking about female rappers, of which there are so many now, and it doesn’t feel like they’re competing with each other.

I am a child of the nineties, and at that time there was a constant tendency to oppose female musicians, an artificially created conflict.

But now we have entered an era where the environment is much more supportive and favorable. All this, combined with my own growing up experience, became my next story that I want to tell the world,” A. Reja, who continues the narrative of African-American women and the story about them, told the “Bazaar” portal.

Rapper KaMillion also has her own story, who portrays Mia Knight in the series, a free-thinking single mother who tries to break into the local rap music scene, exploiting and exhibiting more than just her musical talents. Crowned Miss Jacksonville at a young age, KaMillion began her stage career as a backing vocalist and dancer before discovering her talent for writing music. Her composed songs have been performed by such world-famous artists as Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Pussycat Dolls, while work on R&B singer HER’s debut album brought KaMillion a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.
