About 40 people invaded Monforte fire station – Observador

About 40 people invaded the Monforte Voluntary Fire Station, in the district of Portalegre, demanding that a child be rescued, Gonçalo Lagem, the mayor of the municipality, said this Sunday. According to the mayor, this situation occurred on Saturday night when a group of people tried to enter “at all costs” in the premises of the firemen of that village in Alentejo.

“With the containment measures (covid-19), firefighters before providing any type of assistance have to prepare themselves, with personal protective equipment and take a little longer. 112 should have been activated, it can’t be like that, they can’t go to the fire station ”, he said.

The mayor said that “help to the child was never at stake”, who has “congenital problems”, being “normal” to be rescued by firefighters.

The Mayor of Monforte also recalled that in December “an episode of an identical nature occurred” at the fire station, as well as “about three weeks ago” at the Monforte Health Center.

Gonçalo Lagem added that he has already alerted the President of the Republic and the Minister of Internal Administration to the insecurity problems that are occurring in Monforte.

“Both the city council, and all municipal councils where there are episodes of these, or the GNR, are powerless to solve the problem, which is not resolved in this way. The problem can only be solved if there are bold guidelines from top to bottom ”, he defended.

In order to avoid further episodes of this nature in the future, the mayor announced that the municipality will proceed to build a fence, using video surveillance, in the vicinity of the fire station.

Despite classifying GNR’s performance in that territory as “remarkable”, Gonçalo Lagem demands a “more muscular visibility” of the security forces, as well as “more resources” for the Monforte post.

“There must be, once and for all and from top to bottom, effective guidelines and penalties for those who prevaricate and for those who do not comply with the rules of the ordinary citizen, who pays taxes, who lives off his work and wants peace and tranquility ”, He defended.

Lusa contacted the public relations officer of the GNR Portalegre Territorial Command, Major David Pires, who said that there have been “isolated situations” of insecurity in Monforte, considering that there are still no cases for “alarmism”.

“The means are balanced, both those of the territorial patrols, and the intervention detachment, which always has teams in the district, often directed to the municipality of Monforte”, he said.

GNR was called to the Monforte Fire Station, and is proceeding to identify the people involved in that episode.
