In the capital’s Historic Center, two hundred fantastic creatures invaded the streets this Saturday and dazzled a crowd of more than 630 thousand people, according to official figures.
The Monumental Alebrijes Parade and Contest, organized by the Museum of Popular Art (MAP), offered an explosion of color and creativity that left attendees amazed at the magnitude of the imposing figures. The cultural event started from the Zócalo, and traveled three kilometers of streets, to the Angel of Independence.

Throughout the journey, dragons, multicolored armadillos, axolotls and giant cats were the protagonists. The artisans, with dedication and talent, brought these unreal beings to life with cardboard, wood, ironwork, among other materials, and achieved creations that seemed to come to life with their vibrant colors and intricate details. Selfies and videos were a constant among attendees, who were eager to capture the magic of these works of art in motion.
The parade featured the participation of artisans from different states of the country, who contributed their style and vision. Daniel Marcial Camacho, artisan from the Álvaro Obregón mayor’s office, presented his Cochiloco alebrije, a mix between pig, goat and bat.
“The skeleton is made of blacksmithing and I covered it with paper and paste,” he explained about his creative process. Marcial Camacho, who has participated since 2008, highlighted the technical evolution that the event has experienced, where more sophisticated structures are now used that even include movement.

The awarding of the three best alebrijes will take place on October 26 at the MAP facilities (Revillagigedo 11, Colonia Centro).
The winners will receive economic incentives of 70 thousand, 50 thousand and 40 thousand pesos, respectively. Meanwhile, visitors will be able to enjoy this impressive exhibition from today until 8 p.m. on November 3, on the north and south sidewalks of Paseo de la Reforma (between the Column of Independence and Lieja Street, a a few steps from the Stele of Light).
