About 1,700 people in France are infected with monkeypox

Paris (ANTARA) – About 1,700 people have been infected with monkeypox in France, Health Minister Francois Braun said Monday (25/7).

Braun said the government had so far opened about 100 monkeypox vaccination centers and more than 6,000 people had received the vaccine against the disease.

He asked patients who had lesions or other symptoms to self-isolate immediately.

Braun said he did not see a major threat to society and said the government would focus vaccinations on target groups deemed most at risk.

“The profiles (of the patients) are mostly men who have had sexual intercourse with other men, but one can also become infected through contact with blisters on the patient’s skin,” Braun said in an interview on BFM TV.

Most of the infections have occurred in the Paris area, he said, and a large specialized vaccination center will open in the French capital this week.

The World Health Organization says the rapidly spreading outbreak of monkeypox is a global health emergency.

So far this year, more than 16,000 cases of monkeypox were found in more than 75 countries, and five deaths occurred in Africa.

Monkeypox is an endemic disease in Africa. During this outbreak, the disease caused by the virus was found mostly among men who have sex with men and outside Africa.
