Von Christian Zaschke, New York
The state of Kansas is easy to find on a map of the USA: it’s right in the middle. Like so many states in the center of the country, it is conservative and dominated by the Republican Party. People on the coasts like to refer to states like Kansas as “Flyover States” because you only see them from planes when traveling from New York to Los Angeles or from Boston to Seattle. The dictum of the flyover states expresses the lack of interest that the mostly democratically governed coastal cities normally have for these regions.
