Abortion in the United States: the State of Indiana introduces an almost total ban on abortion

Indiana introduced a near total ban on abortion after the state House of Representatives and Senate approved the measure on Friday, according to US media. Termination of pregnancy is still only possible in cases of rape or incest. Indiana previously allowed abortion up to 20 weeks after conception. With the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States to reconsider the constitutional right to abortion, the American states can now legislate to modify the rules relating to the voluntary interruption of pregnancy (VTP) on their territory.

It is now up to the governor, Republican Eric Holcomb, to sign the new law. According to the Reuters news agency, Indiana becomes the first state to ban abortion almost entirely since the Supreme Court ruling.

According to the AP news agency, an amendment to remove the exceptions for incest and rape from the law was introduced in the House of Representatives, but it did not survive the vote. Republicans voted split on the issue.
