In Texas, Parliament passed a new abortion law, in two slightly different versions between the Senate and the Assembly. The differences will have to be ironed out before the governor gives his approval. The text prohibits abortions as soon as the cardiac activity of the embryo is detectable, that is to say at about six weeks of pregnancy[1]. Unlike other legislation of this type, the text also provides that anyone other than a state official can sue an abortion provider or anyone involved in an abortion in any way. Likewise, anyone providing funds for an abortion can be prosecuted.
“Once the heartbeat is detected, life is protected”, said Representative Shelby Slawson, sponsor of the text. “For too long, abortion has meant the end of a beating heart He continued.
[1] The current law allows abortions up to 20 weeks, and until term in case of danger to the life of the mother or serious fetal malformation.
