Abortion Act of 1901 reintroduced in the US state of Arizona | NOW

An Arizona judge ruled Friday that an abortion ban dating back to 1901 is back in effect. The law, which bans abortion in almost all cases, was suspended in 1973 due to the federal ruling in the Roe v Wade case. It gave women in the United States the constitutional right to abortion.

The US Supreme Court overturned the nationwide abortion just in June. The ruling in Roe vs Wade was dismissed at that time.

Since then, individual states can once again determine their own abortion laws. In Arizona, since Friday’s sentence, abortion is allowed only if necessary to save the mother’s life.

Planned Parenthood, a health organization that runs many abortion clinics in the United States, said in response to the ruling that it “has the sad result of taking Arizona residents back in time nearly 150 years.”

US media reports that an appeal is likely to be filed against the ruling.
