Tax returns on paper will remain possible for companies until 2028 at the latest. The law that requires them to file digital returns from 2025 has been lifted. This is reported by De Tijd and the Federal Public Service Finance confirms the news. The paper option will continue to exist for private individuals.
A 2021 law introduced an obligation for the FPS Finance to communicate digitally with taxpayers, via the eBox and MyMinfin. This measure mainly concerned communication with professionals and legal entities. Private individuals had to explicitly indicate that they opted for digital communication and an electronic declaration.
However, the FPS Finance will not meet that deadline, reports De Tijd. The FPS Finance confirms that there has been an amendment to the law, whereby the deadline for corporate tax returns has been postponed to January 1, 2028. For personal income tax, paper returns will still be an option for private individuals who do not expressly opt for digital to elect.
Private individuals and companies also do not seem to be fully ready for the switch. In 2022, more than 3.25 million Belgians filed their personal tax returns digitally, while just over 264,000 people still filed their tax returns on paper. Companies have already made further progress.
