Abogacía Unida Lawyers Demand Fair Treatment in Canary Islands Budgets

The group of lawyers Abogacía Unida hopes that the Budgets of the Canary Islands Autonomous Community, whose parliamentary process is held between this Tuesday and Wednesday in the Regional Chamber, will finally collect their demands to correct what they consider “unfair treatment” in the exercise of the official shift, among others, “remuneration, incorrectly classified as compensation for expenses.”

In a press release sent to this editorial office, Abogacía Unida indicates that “in the negotiations held with the Ministry of Justice there has been empathy in considering that the current situation must be corrected, as it has been dragging on for decades; and for this purpose a Negotiation Table has been convened for the month of January, but adopting as a premise that the Ministry at this time does not know what amounts can be available to pay for the services of the essential right to defend judicial or extrajudicial interests. by people without resources.”

In this sense, the group explains that “it is unknown why the budgets approved by the Governing Board are closed without the possibility of internal modification. Along these lines, the PSOE has presented an amendment, which could help solve the serious situation of injustice that is being suffered; since it is known that at the beginning of 2024, items with very important amounts will arrive from the Government of Spain (either in direct items or through debt relief) independently of other items from other administrations and unforeseen income that will arrive.”

The text of the amendment says: “The Government of the Canary Islands will guarantee that, in the first half of 2024, adequate and sufficient credits are made available to provide economic coverage for the remuneration of the official shift and free legal assistance with effect from 1 January 2024, updating the scales to the current year, as required by Law 1/1996 of January 10 on Free Legal Assistance.”

Hence, these lawyers are expectant before the parliamentary sessions where the Canary Islands Budgets will be discussed, “on which the attention of the thousands of lawyers dedicated to the Office Shift (mandatory by the aforementioned Law) is focused. An Amendment in which they trust brings together good harmony, consensus and understanding, since all political groups are aware of the serious unfair situation that they have been suffering for decades and that needs to be corrected.”
