An “abnormal situation” was detected during a maneuver of the Russian probe Luna-25 before its landing on the moon. Because of the problem, the maneuver was not completed, the Russian space agency Roscosmos announced on Saturday.
The agency adds that specialists are analyzing the situation. No further details were given. The moon landing was planned for August 21, but it is not clear whether the probe will be able to meet this schedule.
Roscosmos reported earlier that the first results of the Luna-25 mission had been received and that they were being analyzed.
The agency also released images of the lunar crater Zeeman taken by the spacecraft. The crater is the third deepest in the southern hemisphere of the Moon, measuring 190 kilometers in diameter and 8 kilometers deep.
Roscosmos also announced that the data obtained so far by the probe has provided information about the chemical elements in the lunar soil and will facilitate the work of devices designed to study the near surface of the moon.
