ABN has made its highest profit in years. Last year, 2.7 billion euros in profit remained at the bottom line. In recent years, profits were only slightly higher in 2017.

Like other banks, the bank is benefiting from the rapidly rising interest rates. Due to the higher interest rate, more income is generated on loans; At the same time, the bank spends relatively less money on interest on savings because it rises less quickly.

If you look at the results of the last few months, the bank’s prime time seems to be slowly coming to an end. Profit figures have been declining in the last two quarters. The bank expects that interest income this year will be approximately as high as last year.

Money to treasury

The bank will use part of the profit to buy back 500 million euros of its own shares. Shareholders usually benefit from this.

The largest shareholder is the Dutch State. Since last year, he has been selling some of the shares and will soon still own about 40 percent of them.
