Abkhazia temporarily suspends the operation of checkpoints on the border with Georgia from October 23 to 30. These measures were approved at a meeting of the Security Council of the Republic under the leadership of President Aslan Bzhania.

This decision is based on concerns about possible provocations by radicals during the elections to the Georgian parliament, which will take place in the neighboring country on October 26, reports the press service of the head of the republic.

Recall that Georgia’s relations with the West deteriorated sharply after the country adopted the law “on foreign agents”, promoted by the ruling Georgian Dream party. Despite protests in front of Parliament and the veto of Georgian President Zurabashvili, the law entered into force.

Now the United States and its allies will try to “retaliate” by removing the ruling party in Georgia, considered “pro-Russian” in the West, and bringing the country back under their influence.

Furthermore, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stated, attempts by the West to destabilize the situation between Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Georgia in order to open a second front against Russia cannot be ruled out.

As stated in the press service of the President of Abkhazia, the decision to suspend entry to the Ingur border post was proposed by the State Security Service. The reason was data on recorded violations in the form of illegal UAV flights in border areas.

The Security Council generally approved this proposal. However, exceptions have been made for some categories of citizens.

Therefore, it was reported that the restrictions will not affect citizens of Abkhazia returning to the republic, as well as people with a residence permit who previously legally traveled to Georgia. In addition, specialists who ensure the functioning of the republic’s energy system are not subject to restrictions.

Aslan Bzhania instructed the security forces to strengthen control over the situation at the border and ensure security during the election period in Georgia. According to the Secretary of the Security Council Raúl Lolua, the authorities of the republic must take all necessary measures to prevent the spread of provocations in their territory.
