Abidal’s farewell letter, with a dart to the ‘sacred cows’?

Eric Abidal this week put an end to his career as technical secretary of FC Barcelona. Despite having been ratified by the board of directors of Josep Maria Bartomeu, the former French footballer made the decision to resign being aware of your mistakes in office, and seeing himself without the strength or sufficient capacity to improve the situation that the club is currently going through at a sporting level.

The Frenchman resigned from his position this past Tuesday, and a few hours after the news was confirmed issued an open letter to the fans of the Barça club, published through his Instagram account and written entirely in Catalan, in which he said goodbye to the Barça fans and He further explained that the decision not to continue was his, thus renouncing the remaining year of his contract.

In the letter, you can read a part in which Abidal relates how he has tried to change some aspects related to the first team squad Barça, but according to himself assures it has been impossible for him. Will it be a dart to the ‘sacred cows’ of the club? Or to the directive of Josep Maria Bartomeu for vetoing some of their decisions at specific times?

The point is that Abidal had the odd scuffle with the culés captains for his statements, always constructive but sometimes misinterpreted. Has finally decided resign by assuming their failures and not feeling capable to help the club come back.

Abidal’s letter

Below we reproduce Abidal’s complete letter, addressed to Barcelona fans:

“Dear Barcelonistas,

I want to take advantage of these lines to say goodbye to all of you. I do it from the deepest gratitude for having been able to share two important stages of my life. One as a player and the other as head of the Technical Secretariat of FC Barcelona. This second farewell includes 2 years in which I have tried to work to make a better Barça. Two intense seasons that I have ended by choice. Despite the fact that the Board of Directors ratified me in my position on Monday, last Tuesday I presented my resignation.

In the last two years I have tried to make changes that I thought were very important for the future of the first team. Despite my conviction and insistence, I have not succeeded. That is why I think the time has come to put an end to my relationship with the club. I want to record that I have renounced the year of contract that I still had with FC Barcelona.

Today the situation of the club is complicated, but have no doubt that I wish with all my heart that it can be overcome and may the successes return soon as this great club deserves.

Eternal thanks to all.

Long live Barça and long live Catalonia.

Eric Abidal ”.
