Ludvig Åberg continues to impress in this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-An. During Saturday came the second consecutive bogey-free round and with 16 under par, Åberg is only one stroke behind the leading American Wyndham Clark, who set a new course record with 60 strokes (-12) during Saturday. Åberg has had 65-67 the last two rounds and is obviously in good shape, but it is not entirely certain that he will have the opportunity to chase his second victory on the PGA Tour on Sunday, a severe storm is moving in over the area and there a risk that you will not be able to get 18 more holes in. Even more rain is expected and, in addition, winds that in the villages can reach over 25 meters/second, if there is a game, it will probably be played without spectators for safety reasons. The track is also already waterlogged and cannot handle much more rain. Twelve balls that stuck during the first three rounds have disappeared.
– We must be sure that everyone will be able to finish the last round, otherwise we will not start it. We have had 54 holes where all players have had fair conditions but of course we still hope to finish the competition over 72 holes, explained Gary Young, head umpire on the PGA Tour after Saturday’s round.
For Åberg, the third round was yet another proof that his long game is top class. He hit 15 greens and 12 of 14 fairways and was never really in trouble. Despite only rolling in barely 15 meter putts during the round, he went five under par and he was satisfied after the round.
– It felt stress-free today, I didn’t miss too much and I’m happy with the patience I had. We tried to be aggressive when we had the chance and more cautious when needed. We’ll see what happens with the weather, the forecast doesn’t look good and there’s nothing you can do about it, but I’ll be ready to play and hope there’s another round. I’ve played a lot of golf in bad weather and I’m ready, said Åberg after Saturday’s game.
For Wyndham Clark it was a fantastic day and he admitted that he thought the weather might give him the win after just 54 holes.
– I feel both. You always want to win the right way and I am mentally prepared to play the final round. It looks uncertain right now but I’m hoping for games, Clark said.
The other Swede in the field, Alexander Norén, made a fine round of 69 on Saturday and with an eight under par total he shares 26th place, nine strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark.
