L’AQUILA – First treatment in Abruzzo for the removal of plaques from the abdominal aorta carried out using the lithotripter and without surgical incisions. It was performed in recent days, on a patient over sixty years old, by the vascular surgery department of the L’Aquila hospital, of which Dr. Gennaro Bafilehead of the surgical team, in collaboration with the interventional radiologists, led by Dr. Aldo Victor Giordano and by the anesthetist Dr Roberta Papolaassisted by the team of nursing staff in the operating block.
The treatment, which due to the innovative technique adopted is currently practiced by few Italian centres, was carried out with a tool made available by the company management of the ASL, led by the manager Ferdinand Romanoas part of the overall program of modernization and further strengthening of the assistance activities of San Salvatore.
With a device equipped with a lithotripter it was possible, without making surgical cuts, to treat the occlusion of the abdominal aorta with shock waves which made it possible to ‘soften’ the completely calcified obstructive plaques (coralreef aorta), allowing the placement of a prosthesis inside the artery and restore blood flow.
Thanks to the innovative procedure, adopted by Dr. Bafile, who is also director of vascular surgery in Avezzano, avoided surgery on the patient who, due to the pathologies she suffers from, would have run the risk of suffering heart failure. In addition to this aspect, which is crucial for the patient’s health, the technique followed has the advantage of being minimally invasive, which translates into less suffering and shorter hospital stays, so much so that the treated patient will be discharged shortly.
The modern method, the result of teamwork with other services, allows us to ensure an increasingly higher level of quality, attracting the L’Aquila hospital also to users in other areas, both in the region and in other parts of Italy.
