Abdi Nageeye’s New York Marathon Disappointment and Possible Diet Troubles

Abdi Nageeye was unable to compete for victory at the New York Marathon on Sunday due to a stitch in the side. The Dutchman thinks that the cause could be due to a different diet.

Nageeye had been on a gluten-free diet for the past two months, but stopped in New York. “Here I just ate pasta and bread. Maybe my intestines were stuck, but I have never had problems so quickly.”

Despite a creditable fourth place, disappointment prevailed. “My legs felt fine, but I couldn’t control the sting. It went away for a while, but at 21 kilometers it came back much more intense. It was as if God was teasing me or something,” said 34-year-old Nageeye.

“My physio asked how often I had gone to the toilet. That wasn’t much here. It kept getting worse, but I couldn’t get out again.” Nageeye was referring to last summer’s World Cup in Budapest. There he had to abandon the race after 27 kilometers due to “balloon legs”.

“I am now going to take a moment to recover and see with the team how these problems arose. In a few days I can hopefully look back on a good race. This was mainly a mental test. We will then plan for the Games in Paris.” , says Nageeye.
