Kim Godwin’s Retirement

ABC News President Kim Godwin has announced her retirement from broadcast journalism. After reflecting on her tenure, Godwin stated, “I have decided to retire from broadcast journalism.” She further mentioned that it was not an easy decision but the right one for her future and her family’s priorities.

Leadership Transition

Debra OConnell, president of News Group and Networks at Disney Entertainment, will take the helm of ABC News on an interim basis. She expressed her gratitude to Kim Godwin for her contributions to ABC News and emphasized that the team’s reputation and credibility are of utmost importance.

Kim Godwin’s Career

Kim Godwin, the first Black woman to lead a national broadcast news network, joined ABC News in 2021 after an illustrious career at CBS News as an executive and producer. However, the restructuring in February, led by Disney veteran Debra OConnell, limited Godwin’s authority within the organization.

Challenges and Support

During her tenure, Godwin faced challenges such as the suspension and firing of ‘GMA3’ co-hosts Amy Robach and TJ Holmes, as well as grumbling from staff. However, the National Association of Black Journalists has noted significant support for Godwin inside the organization and plans to hold discussions with ABC and Disney executives.

An Exceptional Legacy

Under Godwin’s leadership, ABC News has continued its success, including being the No.1 news network for 12 consecutive seasons. The network has received numerous awards and nominations, demonstrating its commitment to excellence and truthful reporting. Godwin expressed pride in the ABC News team and their unparalleled accomplishments.

Looking Ahead

As ABC News undergoes a leadership transition, Debra OConnell expressed her commitment to working with the team and shaping a new path forward. She aims to provide the necessary support for continued success and innovation in the rapidly evolving news industry.

Farewell and Gratitude

In her departing message, Godwin expressed her gratitude to Dana Walden and Debra OConnell and to the entire ABC News team for their support, inspiration, and love. She urged the team to remember the joy in journalism and wished them continued success.
