Sweden and Finland appear to have to wait another two weeks before Hungary gives the green light to the countries’ Nato applications, according to a Hungarian newspaper.
The votes in the National Assembly have been postponed several times in the past. Now it was meant to be held next week, but on Tuesday the newspaper HVG reports that the schedule has once again been changed.
Among the NATO countries, it is only Hungary and Turkey, which has not given the go-ahead for Sweden and Finland to become members.
According to a left-wing opposition politician, Agnes Vadai, it is the governing party Fidesz that wants the postponement. On Tuesday, she received a letter from the country’s deputy prime minister, Semjén Zsolt, in which the national assembly is encouraged to postpone the hearing until the end of March or the beginning of April.
The reason is said to be that negotiations are still ongoing with the European Commission, which affects, among other things, decisions about Hungary’s budget. The processing of the NATO applications is not mentioned in the letter.
