FIFA, the world governing body, imposed sanctions on Brazil and Argentina after the strange abandonment of the game in the World Cup qualifiers in September. The game will be rescheduled at a location and date to be determined.
Accordingly, the Brazilian association CBF has to pay a fine of 500,000 Swiss francs (approx. 477,000 euros) for violations of order and security, the penalty for the Argentine association AFA is 200,000 Swiss francs (approx. 191,000 euros) for breaches of duty with regard to order and security as well as game preparation and -participation. Both associations also have to pay 50,000 Swiss francs (approx. 48,000 euros) each because the game was abandoned.

Argentinian players Emiliano Buendia, Emiliano Martinez, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero will also be banned for two games each for violating the document “Resumption of Football Operations – International Match Protocol”.

The four Argentinians playing in England are said to have broken anti-corona regulations ahead of the September 5 game and given false information about their itinerary. On September 5, officers from the federal police and the state health authority Anvisa came onto the pitch after a few minutes, and the game was stopped after 50 minutes. (sid/fe)
