Philippine authorities are leading search and rescue operations for a missing indigenous leader, Datu Mandiangan “Bai (female chieftain)” Ayunan of the Ati tribe. Ayunan was last seen on a fishing trip on 14 July. The Ati tribe are one of the country’s most marginalized groups and are often subject to discrimination and land-grabbing by more powerful forces. Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año has called on diving professionals to join the search and rescue operations. The Philippine Coast Guard is also participating in the search and retrieval operations.
