NY. American Aaron Judge, star hitter for the New York Yankees, experienced his first expulsion in the Major Leagues on Saturday during the 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Judge, Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the American League in 2022, had accumulated 869 games without receiving this punishment in the Majors.
Judge himself, 32, admitted to being “a little surprised” by judge Ryan Blakney’s decision, which took him out of the game for a comment made after a third strike in the seventh inning.
“I left saying what I had to say,” said Judge, who regretted having been the protagonist of the game due to the referee’s decision.
The batter is the first Yankee captain to be ejected from a game since Don Mattingly in 1994.
New York manager Aaron Boone also argued that the punishment was unjustified.
“I was surprised,” Boone said. “Judgy’ says very little, usually. (He was) walking away very respectfully.”
Referee head Alan Porter, without elaborating, said Judge apparently “said something he shouldn’t have said.”
The Bronx Bombers, in turn, reached 22 wins in the campaign, placing them in second place in the East division of the American League.
In another game, the Minnesota Twins extended their winning streak to 12 consecutive games by beating the Boston Red Sox 3-1. Venezuelan Pablo López (3-2) was a figure throwing six complete innings in which he barely allowed one run, achieving his third victory of the season.
The Twins have the longest winning streak in the major leagues this season, matching the team’s streak from the late 1980s, the second-longest in franchise history. The club’s record of 15 consecutive wins dates back to June 1991, the last season Minnesota won the World Series.
Finally, Mexican Luis Urías hit a home run in the Oakland Sea’s shutout against the Houston Astros (5-0). For the Sonoran it was his third home run of the season.
