Aaron Judge eclipsed the American League record for most homers in a season set by Rogers Maris, generating one of the biggest stories of 2022. Now, the Yankees slugger will be rewarded in a peculiar way; receiving the key to New York City.
Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday on local radio station 1010 WINS that the city plans to honor Judge, who hit 62 home runs last year, also winning the AL MVP Award.
“The team is organizing everything now,” Adams said. “We are in communication with the Yankees organization. If they accept it, we’d love to give it to Aaron Judge. It’s a historic moment.”
The symbolic Key to the City was handed out for the first time in 1702 and resembles a great skeleton key, as a “symbol of affection, civic recognition and gratitude, reserved for people whose public service and the common good rises to the highest level of achievement,” according to the city’s website.
The Yankees’ entire roster was awarded the keys to the city following their championship win in 2009. In recent years, the city council has also honored Dwight Gooden (2017) and the 1969 version of the Mets (2019).
