Aargauer Gemeinde launches Switzerland’s first shoulder tapping machine – Fricktal – Aargau

The idea of a virtual shoulder tapping machine came about in the community through a saying by the mayor Peter Weber. When someone has done something particularly well, he usually says: “Now you can stand under the shoulder-patting machine for half an hour.” The slogan got stuck – and in a meeting of the local council, the committee asked itself whether such a machine would be feasible.

A concept was worked out, sponsors sought. “The response was great both inside and outside the Mettau Valley,” says Weber happily. Crowdfunding brought in over 20,000 francs and over 50 sponsors and donors jumped on the bandwagon. It soon became clear where the machine was to be installed: in the last telephone booth in the village.

The location at the former post office and today’s Café Nova is ideal: in the middle of the Mettau part of the village, on the main road through the valley. The machine is noticed and can also be admired and used by tourists and hikers. “On the one hand, the machine is intended for our residents, who can pick up a reward here,” says Weber. On the other hand, it should also lure people into the valley to marvel at the first and only well-done machine. Tourism advertising à la Mettauertal.

The visitors learn something about the valley from the machine – a computer – and the sponsors receive a platform. On board as main sponsors are companies from the valley, the Jurapark Aargau, Swisslos and the Neue Aargauer Bank.

The principle is simple: the person who wants to be praised steps into the phone booth, tells the machine what they did well, or selects the one to be commended from a list. As a reward there is then a musical pat on the back and a voucher, for example for a coffee. One can only say: Well done, Mettauertal municipality.
