The Aargau Cantonal Police Corps is equipped with electric shock devices. The government council has approved a loan of 1.96 million francs for the purchase of 430 Tasers. The cantonal parliament had quietly transferred a corresponding postulate in 2023.

The cantonal police purchase a product that has been tested and approved for use on behalf of the Conference of Cantonal Police Commanders and the Zurich Forensic Institute. In addition to the equipment, the total amount also includes all accessories, training and reserve material as well as a reserve for unforeseen expenses.

The media office of the cantonal Department of Economic Affairs and Interior (DVI) confirmed a corresponding report from the “Aargauer Zeitung” on Thursday upon request.

Taser training for the Aargau cantonal police

The cantonal police corps will complete theoretical and practical training on the Taser. The cantonal police will issue uniform instructions on the conditions for the use of so-called destabilization devices.

Currently, only members of the special police force “Argus” are equipped with Tasers. The regional police are not affected by the government council’s Taser purchase decision.

Last year, the government council rejected the demand from civil parties in the Grand Council to develop its own legal basis for the canton-wide use of Tasers by the police. However, the government council agreed to accept the proposal, which was submitted as a binding motion, as a postulate. The Grand Council then referred this postulate in June 2023 without discussion.

Police operations: More electric shocks

Across Switzerland, an electric impulse gun was triggered a total of 86 times during police operations last year. That was 17 more missions than the previous year. This information was provided by the Conference of Cantonal Police Commanders in Switzerland.
