Aalborg Handbold Defeats Telekom Veszprem 33-28 to Reach Champions League Final Four

A replay followed the most important duel of the season for Veszprem. Momir Ilic’s students visited Aalborg in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals. In the first game, the people of Bakony won 32-31 victory, that they closed only once – at the end. When the Hungarian champion was the last guest of the opponent on Wednesday, chase they suffered, but then they could hardly be sad, because the result was an increase. This time, however, the “Builders” could not be eliminated, knowing that the Danes would in this case reach the last four of the series.

Last year, neither team made it to the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, so both participants must have been hungry for success. The people of Bakony have not played since the play-off, and the people of the north played a 32-32 draw against Ribe-Esbjerg in the middle of the competition. Broad conclusions could hardly be drawn from this, as Aalborg will definitely be in the league playoffs, so there was not much at stake for that meeting.

Veszprem’s players arrived in Denmark on Tuesday, but without their goalkeeper coach, Árpád Sterbik, who heart attack are established. According to the club, his condition improved by Wednesday.

Even though he started well, Veszprem was able to run after the result

Like the Veszprem Arena, packed venues in Aalborg welcomed the main acts. One change had to be made in the Bakony line-up: Gasper Marguc was missing from the right side after injuring his heel again. Kentin Mahé, who watched the first game among the ultras, returned to the team. For the home team, Jack Thurin was out, while Patrick Wiesmach Larsen was in.

This time, the people of Bakony got a better start, the Danes made many mistakes in attack at first. The biggest advantage the hosts had was three shots at 7-4 in the tenth minute. At that time, the people of Veszprem seemed to be in control of the game, but unfortunately, they soon got into an ups and downs. The home team turned the game around in a matter of minutes and made it a 6-1 run. With Denmark leading 10-8, Ilics asked for time, but the disadvantage of the Hungarian champion continued to grow. Mike Jensen replaced Rodrigo Corrales in goal for a few minutes, but that didn’t stop the home team either. Aalborg led 18-14 at the break, so they were closer to the last four after 30 minutes.

At the beginning of the second half, Veszprem tried to push, and he succeeded to some extent, among other things, with Corrales’ saves and calm offensive play. It is a different matter whether the Hungarians woke up from their first slumber this time too. All in all, they had very little benefit. The Bakony defense had a tough time with the pair of Mads Hoxer and Thomas Arnoldsen. They mostly delivered the goals from the home team. In the last 10 minutes, the Hungarian champion could have taken a one-goal deficit, but Hugo Descat’s penalty was saved by Niklas Landin (28-25). A great opportunity was missed, as happened in the 55th minute, when the hosts could have scored two easy goals, but instead ended up with two turnovers.

Another issue is that the Danes also became strict about their hair. Ilics called its final timeout with more than two minutes to go, at 31-28. Despite the numerous opportunities, the “Builders” could not overcome their opponent: Aalborg won 33-28, proving that it was stronger with a total of four goals.

The Danes reached the last four of the Champions League, while Veszprem were eliminated in the quarter-finals for the second time in a row.
