De Mos foresees a painful reserve role during the European Championship: ‘Too much circus, a hype’

If it were up to Aad de Mos, Xavi Simons would not get a starting place in the Dutch national team during the European Championships next summer. The analyst is not exactly impressed with the creative. “Too much circus, a hype,” said the former coach in conversation with reporter Jelle Kusters from Voetbalzone.
After asking whether De Mos has any advice for national coach Ronald Koeman, the analyst starts by exposing the sore point of the Dutch national team. “The problems are at the front,” he sees.
“Memphis Depay in good standing is a very important player for me,” says the former coach of Ajax, among others, who immediately makes a comment. “I wonder if he will ever recover,” De Mos said of his recent injury.
“Brobbey is on the right track,” he further philosophizes about the offensive line. “He is of course a boy who has many qualities. That could well be a revelation, I think. I am a Brobbey fan.”
De Mos also responds to Hans Kraay junior’s proposal. The ESPN analyst previously advocated a midfield of Frenkie de Jong and Jerdy Schouten in the Dutch national team. “Schouten reads it like a trainer, he is always in my team,” De Mos praises the PSV midfielder.
But not every international is equally enthusiastic about De Mos. “Xavi Simons? That’s still too much circus, that’s a hype. I think Simons is a hype. Or will he play at the European Championship? No,” the analyst answers firmly.
De Mos also speaks out about the goalkeeper issue. Justin Bijlow and Bart Verbruggen would benefit from the goalkeeping coach paying more attention to improving their appearance and coaching qualities, he says. In any case, one candidate is eliminated for De Mos. “Andries Noppert is gone for me.”
European Championship chances for the Dutch team
De Mos is clear about the chances of the Dutch team. Getting through the group stage is a formality, De Mos thinks. But can the Netherlands also surprise in the final tournament? “No. The Netherlands cannot compete for the prizes. Impossible.”
