AA Gent and Racing Genk have verbally agreed on the transfer of Wouter Vrancken

KRC Genk

Wouter Vrancken and KRC Genk are parting ways with immediate effect. The future of the head coach almost certainly lies with AA Gent, which has now reached an agreement with the Limburg club about the transfer.

The understanding between Wouter Vrancken and the board of KRC Genk had been missing for some time. After a brilliant first season, in which the Limburgers played refreshing football under Vrancken and narrowly missed out on winning the national title, this year’s performance remained below expectations. Both in Europe and in competition – with the exception of a flare-up in the Champions’ play-offs – they did not perform as expected. This led to nervousness, as both parties had different opinions about the cause of the poor performance.

While Vrancken liked to attribute the major difference with the first season to the departure of strong players such as Onuachu (January ’23), Trésor (August ’24), Munoz (January ’24) and Paintsil (February ’24), the Genk sporty officials thought that better performance is possible with the current player core. In addition, the Limburg board also believed that the integration of talented young people could be faster, an element that is central to the club’s long-term policy.

On the way to AA Ghent

The mutual frictions became increasingly greater, also because everything seems to indicate that Wouter Vrancken will become the new trainer of AA Gent. The East Flemish already have an agreement with the Limburg club, they just have to wait for a deal between Vrancken and the Buffalos. Racing Genk itself does not wish to respond for the time being.
