Suda Goichi (i.e. Suda51), who now works for one of China’s tech companies, which is expanding abroad, can think more freely thanks to Chinese money.
At the end of last year, news came out that Grasshopper Manufacture and its leader, Suda51, had joined NetEase Games, so not only will Tencent set foot everywhere, but we can say the same about another big Chinese tech giant. And the effect of this is already noticeable, as Suda gave a rather optimistic interview with some Grasshopper colleagues to a Japanese website, Automatonnak.
Grasshopper Manufacture wants to create three new IPs over the next ten years. We’ve written about this before. To do this, however, the studio is expanding its staff with 100% reinforcement: Suda51 wants to increase the number of its team from thirty to sixty. These games will be implemented by the Japanese studio with Unreal Engine 5, and the goals include becoming an AA company. That means you no longer want to be an indie team at Grasshopper, but you don’t even want to hit an AAA level. (Such was the case with Ninja Theory after Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. They have since been acquired by Microsoft; and the sequel to Hellblade is underway.)
Suda51 doesn’t really want to just take on the position of producer, which is understandable because he’s been in that position for a good decade. Now he wants to do creative leadership and even directing tasks on the three new IPs, and since No More Heroes III hasn’t been a weak release, somewhere that seems like a logical decision. But what about the Deadpool idea he brought up earlier? The director revealed that he had talked to Disney (they also have Marvel Studios…), but it is not known how serious the dialogue took place. It sounds like it’s up to Marvel how serious the opportunity may be for the Sudanese… and if he doesn’t get a green flag from the Mouse Empire, Suda will be working on original projects.
Whatever you do many good luck to him.
