A76 partly closed and train traffic stopped due to gas leak at Chemelot in Geleen | NOW

Due to a leak of hexane gas at the Chemelot industrial estate in Geleen, part of the A76 was closed on Monday morning and the train traffic in the area was stopped, the fire brigade told NU.nl. The leak has now been plugged and the gas has not ended up outside the site, the spokesman said.

Emergency services came out en masse around 9:30 am after a report of a leak in the industrial estate.

The A76 motorway is closed at Beek and Sittard. Train traffic between Sittard and Maastricht was halted as a precaution until 12:00.

“According to the first measurements, the gas did not leave the site,” said the spokesman for the fire service.

Hexane gas is explosive and flammable, the spokesman said. There was no fire and no one was injured.

The security region has issued alarm level grip 1. We are working hard to prevent the gas from spreading further.
