A7 Nightmare: Fiery Hay Truck Causes Havoc on Route to Marseille via Rhone/Isere

A heavy truck on fire, carrying 20 tonnes of hay, was reported on the A7 motorway near Vienne towards Marseille, around 8 a.m. this Saturday morning.

Since then, the firefighters and the Vinci Autoroutes teams have worked all morning and until the beginning of the afternoon to restore traffic to motorists.

Back to normal around 2:30 p.m.

All the interventions, in particular the evacuation of the truck and its load, required several hours for a return to normal which could have taken place at the beginning of the afternoon. All morning, traffic at the height of the accident was in the only left lane.

At 11:30 a.m., the traffic jams were still there

Plugs were building up in the area and it was recommended to avoid it if possible. An alternative motorway route signaled by illuminated panels has been set up from the entrances to Lyon to join the A7 in Valence.

At 11:30 a.m., the traffic jams were still as heavy and the firefighters’ intervention was still in progress. According to radio 107.7, it was then necessary to count on at least 40 minutes to cross this zone.

Alternate routes

Due to the heavy influx of traffic expected on the motorway axis, heading south, and the long duration of interventions on the hay cargo, a bypass route has been activated since 9:15 a.m. this Saturday morning.

Drivers were invited to take it from Lyon/Givors to join the A7 in Valence via Grenoble (A46/A43/A48/A49).

From Lyon, on the A6 after the Villefranche-sur-Saône toll gate and on the A42 before the junction with the A432, follow the direction of Grenoble. Shortly before Grenoble, take the A49 towards Valence. This route generated an extension of about 70 km and an additional toll.
