A6 Rubigen BE – wrong-way driver causes several accidents on the highway

Several accidents occurred on the A6 motorway near Rubigen on Saturday morning. A car driver died on the scene of the accident. Two people had to be brought to the hospital with the ambulance. The accidents had been preceded by reports of a wrong way. The affected section of the motorway had to be completely blocked for several hours.

On Saturday, February 15, 2020, shortly after 11:05 a.m., a car was reported to the Regional Operations Center of the Cantonal Police of Bern, which was traveling in the wrong direction on the A6 motorway between Thun and Bern. A few minutes later, three traffic accidents were reported on the same section of the route.

According to initial knowledge, a car on the A6 motorway had driven in the wrong direction from Bern to Thun for reasons to be clarified when the three accidents involving a total of eight vehicles occurred at Rubigen. The vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction was also involved.

Several ambulances and a Rega helicopter were called up and immediately went to the accident sites. Despite immediate rescue measures, it could not be prevented that the driver of the wrong-way car died on the scene of the accident. It is an 82-year-old Swiss from the canton of Bern.

Two other people were injured and had to be taken to the hospital with ambulances. According to current knowledge, nine other people who were in the accident vehicles remained unharmed.

The affected section of the motorway had to be blocked for several hours during the rescue and accident work between Kiesen and Bern. There were massive traffic disruptions. In addition to the emergency and rescue workers, the fire brigades Thun, Regio Belp, Münsingen, Rubigen and Wichtrach were deployed, which redirected and regulated the traffic.

Under the direction of the Bern-Mittelland Regional Prosecutor’s Office, an investigation was opened to clarify the exact circumstances and the course of the accidents.
